Policy - When to use the Neonatal Call List
When an urgent/emergent case is booked for a patient less than two months of age (and the primary call individual as well as the 2nd call individual are not on the Neonatal Call team) then the person on neonatal call for that night should be called in to do the case. If the second call person is on the neonatal call team, that person should be utilized.
For pediatric patients older than 2 months, the call team will have to make a judgment with consideration of the exact age of the patient, procedure, and patient's comorbidities as to whether or not to call the neonatal call individual for help.
During regular work hours, patients under 2 months of age should be given anesthesia by a member of the neonatal call team. This may require shifting of room assignments. Over this age, it is up to the floor runner and individuals involved to assess the appropriateness of which provider should give anesthesia for the case.
